What is Science?
There are different definitions of science in different sources. By synthesizing these, we can define science as “the systematic research process carried out to reach general truths and basic laws based on experimental methods, objective observations and data, starting from the desire to know nature or an objective subject”.
“Basic Instinct” in Science:
Mankind has tried to learn nature because of both fear, curiosity, and interests. Natural events such as thunder, lightning, eclipse of the moon or the sun, diseases, disasters sometimes frighten him, sometimes attract his curiosity, especially trying to understand nature in order to increase his own benefit (for example, his level of prosperity, life, even superiority to other people). . After all, human beings have instinctively wanted to know and dominate nature since their existence, whether for fear, curiosity, to exploit or to dominate. This struggle of man with the universe and nature (recent efforts to make peace for his own benefit) and thus knowledge production will continue unceasingly.
Field of Science:
The field of science is all natural phenomena. Here, we perceive natural events in their most general scope. It examines not only physical phenomena, but also sociological, psychological, economic and cultural fields (all of which are natural phenomena) that are directly related to human beings, and these fields are called “Social Sciences”. In summary, every phenomenon related to man and his environment is a phenomenon. It is a natural phenomenon and falls within the research field of science. Mankind has been dealing with an inexhaustible passion and patience since its existence in order to know these facts and direct them for their own benefit, and they do this job, which we assume that other living things cannot do, with the human mind.
Characteristics of the Scientific Process
Throughout the history of humanity, the content, fields and methods of science have undergone serious changes. For this reason, the common and continuous qualities of science are limited. On the other hand, we can see the 4 basic features of science in the field of science, even if there are some temporary regressions in history: Diversity, Continuity, Innovation and Selection.
Diversity: Scientific work is not under the monopoly and permission of anyone. Science is open to everyone as long as it has a certain foundation. Any person or institution that wishes can carry out scientific studies. There is no language, religion, race or country limitation. As such, his interests are varied; There is no limit to these issues.
Continuity: Scientific curiosity and the process of producing knowledge never stop. Since curiosity is human nature, knowledge production has never stopped, even if kings, emperors and even religions have forbidden it.
